and raised in California, Mr. Moretton has a B.A. in Drama from San Jose
State University and an M.F.A. in dance from New York University.
Beginning
with a background in professional ballroom dancing, his dance career spans
over four decades, encompassing performing experiences in musical theatre
and with the companies of Dennis Wayne's DANCERS, Boston Repertory Ballet,
Washington Opera Ballet, Stars of the American Ballet, Joyce Trisler's
Danscompany and Alvin Ailey Repertory Ensemblev (charter member) MTV’s
1999 Music Video Awards, From the Horse’s Mouth – Chapter
10 (2001), and in Japan on NHK-TV with Papaya Suzuki (2001), TV ASAHI
“Poka Poka Chikyu Kazoku”(2005).
Currently on the faculty of STEPS on Broadway, School at STEPS, Ballet
Arts (where he was artistic director of showcases), and Montclair State
University, Mr. Moretton has been on the faculties of Jacob's Pillow,
Alvin Ailey American Dance Center, Joffrey Ballet School, Dance Space,
Inc., and Mary Anthony Dance Studio. In 1984 started teaching for Zena
Rommett in her Floor Barre technique. He has served on the faculty of
David Howard’s Teachers Workshop and has also served as an adjunct
faculty member at Collaborative Arts Project 21 (Musical Theater Department
of the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University), Adelphi University,
San Jose State University, S.U.N.Y. at Purchase; and guest faculty at
Ohio State University, University of Iowa, Brigham Young University, University
of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Oakland University, and Hobart & William Smith
College, and taught at the American Academy of Ballet Festival (Royal
Academy of Dance School), 2000—2011. International teaching includes
Balett Akademien (Stockholm), The Gulbenkian Ballet (Lisbon), Tani Momoko
Ballet School (Tokyo), and at the Horeftika Vimata organization in Nicosia
(Cyprus).
Mr. Moretton’s choreographic commissions include works for Dennis
Wayne's DANCERS, Soundance Repertory Company, Ballet Builders ’99,’06,
Dalton-Hartel Dance, Avila/Weeks, Okamoto Ballet (Japan), Manhattan Opera,
East/West Repertory Ensemble, Three's Co. & Dancers (San Diego), Kaimuki
Dance Theatre (Hawaii), Dutchess Ballet, and Utica Dance Works, also being
invited to be part of the 92nd St. Y’s 75th Anniversary Gala. From
2000—2008 he has been invited to present dances at New Choreographers
on Point "Previews." In addition to workshops with Thunderclap
Productions and the New Arts Festival, he has also choreographed musical
theater productions for Cap 21 (Moll Flanders) and the Castillo
Theater, where he is resident choreographer (Hot Snow; Coming
of Age in Korea; Carmen’s Place; Crown Heights;
Sally & Tom; The Last Temptation of William Jefferson;
Still On the Corner; Mantle, Maris and Mom; The
Task; Playing with Heiner Müller; and Marat/Sade
which was re-staged in the 2000 Midtown International Theater Festival).
From 1998 through 2010, he has choreographed the All-Stars Talent Network
Showcase Galas at Lincoln Center, where he also choreographed What’s
Opera Doc? and Once Upon and Ever After for the Reel to
Real film/ performance series in 2004.
He choreographed for the New York-based band Bootä. Mr. Moretton
has served as Ballet Master and Rehearsal Director for Bill T. Jones/
Arnie Zane Dance Company, Dennis Wayne’s DANCERS, Joyce Trisler’s
Danscompany, Avila/ Weeks, Ann Carlson, Corning Dances & Company,
and Michael Mao’s Dance Express.
He was a
resident choreographer for Soundance Repertory Company from 1995-2000,
and was Artist-in-Residence at the Brooklyn Music School in 2001.
